an element of experimentation- especially on the incidental tracks such as insert coin, Death because of death and What’s Next. There is trademark Slipknot here: reminiscent of their debut, of Iowa and even later offerings but there is also a hint that Slipknot are evolving too. This album reminds us why we love music- not just the genre of metal. Twenty years later and as they release their latest offering I am once again reminded how much we need slipknot’s mayhem in a time of musical mediocrity. It seems impossible that more than twenty years have passed since Slipknot burst onto the music scene bringing with them a mayhem and an originality that many of us were crying out for. Overall some may consider this technically the best Slipknot album ever made, I was a huge fan of the last two albums while they gained some harsh criticism, I would certainly put it up there with their best ever material, a strong return from the 'Knot and I can't wait to see what they do next. Some personal favourites include 'Unsainted', which I absolutely consider one of Slipknot's best ever tracks, and one of the best metal tracks of the millennium, 'Nero Forte' which has one of the catchiest lyrical hooks I've ever heard, 'Critical Darling' and 'Solway Firth' which both just bang very hard. I think the album does miss some of the shredding guitar solos that made tracks like 'Psychosocial' and 'Sulfur' so great, but the riffage is spot on. Slipknot are a band that have been around a long time and know exactly what they're doing, they've blended everything that makes them great and added something extra as well. The harmonies that made Vol 3 and areas of The Gray Chapter so great return, as well as the chugging and shoutiness that made the first two so groundbreaking. The album blends all things that make Slipknot great, Corey's screaming vocals, the fantastically technical drum beats, banging guitar riffs, and a very slick percussion backing. We Are Not Your Kind was massively anticipated and there was much talk that it would hit the heaviness hard in the same vain as Iowa and the original self titled album, having listened to it through twice, I can say in some areas it's not quite as heavy, but in others it's just as heavy, if not heavier. The band have both hit back at fans and critics, specifically through the banger of a song 'All Out Life' released last year, as well as taking it on board by looking back through their catalogue to find a sound matching what made fans fall in love with them in the first place. Slipknot have garnered themselves a lot of criticism over recent years, specifically from their own fans, many claiming that they've lost their sound and have turned 'emo' or 'soft'. This album may take a few listens to appreciate, but trust me, you will end up loving it. The album came with lyrics in the sleeve and CD text so I can see the track names in the car – two little things that mean so much to me. Corey Taylor has clearly used his past experiences to help with some of the lyrics and his voice sounds better than ever. A fantastic song which Jay Weinberg has stated was the first song they finished as it is such a Slipknot song they could have written it in their sleep. I would describe this as a concept album or “musical experience” whereby all the interludes and ballads fit in with the story and are a nice break from the headbanger songs in-between. It has some weird interludes, however if you are a fan of Slipknot this is quite normal. However, this album is up there with Vol 3. Those records hold a special place in my heart as they helped me through my teenage years of being angry at the man! I was 10 and 12 respectively when those records were released, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Now for me personally, Slipknot will never beat their self-titled debut and Iowa. I'm not one for buying physical CD's with the amount of streaming services on offer, however I knew I would listen to this album over and over in the car.

After that I heard “Solway Firth” and I simply had to pre-order the album. Then I heard “Unsainted” and I was blown away. Something which I haven't said since before Vol 3 was due to come out and I was in high school. Secondly, if you are expecting Iowa part 2 then forget about it, they've moved on from that aggressive, raw sound and attitude.Īfter the release of “All Out Life” (not on the album FYI), I was very excited for this record.

It took about 6 or 7 full listen throughs before I started to love and appreciate it. Firstly, let me explain that this album is a grower.
